London has long been a favourite destination of mine; for the sheer variety of sights, sounds, attractions and unadulterated sense of excitement that you feel when you are wandering the Capital’s streets; you will not find its equal anywhere. It was with some sense of excitement then, that I read of the arrival of Tutankhamun and his treasures for an extended exhibition at the British Museum and at once I made a resolution to go to there to view these priceless treasures in person.
Of course, in order to make the very best of this trip I would need to book an overnight stay in one of the many excellent hotels in London that lie within easy reach of the exhibition’s venue and to that end, I swiftly accomplished this with a quick and easy online booking; thankfully, most of the decent hotels in London have this handy facility, which has proved a godsend on many an occasion.
It was with a great sense of accomplishment then that I found myself checking into the Radisson Edwardian Hotel in nearby Oxford Street, some 15 minutes walk away. Now I say ‘with a sense of accomplishment’, because older readers will, no doubt, remember the last time Tutankhamun’s treasures were in London…1972. At that time, the exhibition caused a national sensation and people flocked to the exhibition; some of them queuing for up to 8 hours to get in. Back then, I never got to see the wonders on exhibit; this time though, I had made it and as I mounted the Museum’s steps, the fulfilment of a long cherished dream had at last come to fruition.
So what was it like?
Well, what can I say? No words could really do these treasures justice but ‘spellbinding’, ‘awe inspiring’ and ‘exquisite’ might provide some minor description of what was truly felt that day.
Actually, the day had proved doubly rewarding due to a fortuitous offer that had presented itself whilst I was booking my trip. Very often, when booking a hotel online, an all inclusive hotel offer in London will become available; in my case the hotel offer in London, of accommodation and admission to not only the Tutankhamun exhibition, but to the renowned ‘First Emperor’ exhibition running concurrently.
All in all, I had managed to visit my favourite City, have a great overnight stay in a fabulous London Hotel, avail myself of a brilliant joint exhibition and London hotel offer, fulfil a 36 year old ambition and see two ancient rulers for the price of one…altogether, not a bad day’s work!
